What we Believe

In the year 2000, the president of Freed-Hardeman University put out a statement outlining the Biblical truths that the school embraces. President Sewell saw the changing of the millennium as a perfect opportunity to show the Christians that Biblical truths have not changed, just because the times have.

Occasionally, we have to stop and ask ourselves what it is we believe. If we believe that God's word is the truth in all circumstances, then we have to ask ourselves are we defending this truth the way we should as Christians?

These principles are founded in biblical truths. The following statements do not include all biblical truths one should embrace. The only complete statement of such is the Bible itself. However, this  statement will attempt to touch on some of the fundamental principles and truths we at Freed-Hardeman University are committed to upholding and defending.

THIS WE BELIEVE…

1. We believe the Bible is the complete, inerrant and inspired word of God.

2. We believe in man's creation from the dust of the ground by God.

3. We believe Jesus Christ, God's divine son, lived on the earth, died was buried and bodily resurrected from the dead.

4. We believe Christ originally established the church as one body and desires it to remain one.

5. We believe baptism is a burial in water for the remission of sins and is essential to membership in Christ's church and therefore essential to salvation.

6. We believe the Lord's Supper is to be observed by Christians on every first day of the week and only on the first day as part of God-approved worship.

7. We believe singing and making melody in one's heart, without the use of manmade instruments, is the only acceptable way to worship God in song.

8. We believe marriage was established by God and designed to be a life-long union between a man and a woman.

9. We believe an innocent person with a living mate is permitted by God to divorce and remarry only when the other mate has committed fornication (Matthew 19:9).

10. We believe in making disciples of all nations by preaching the gospel, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything Christ has commanded (Matthew 28:19).

11. We believe one must love the Lord his God with all his heart, and with all his soul and with all his mind and with all his strength (Mark 12:30).

12. We believe one should love his neighbor as himself (Mark 12:31).

13. We believe God established male leadership and responsibility in the home and in the  church.

14. We believe the Christian life is the best life both now and forever.

15. We believe the Bible emphasizes God's grace and man's obedience as integral components of man's salvation.
